FEMALE GENITAL MUTILATION AS A CHILD SAFEGUARDING ISSUE
To explore the issue of Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) and the impact on child victims. Practitioners will also gain further knowledge around the socio-cultural and religious factors underpinning the practice and develop skills in identifying individuals at risk. The training will also explore current debates around informed consent and male circumcision.
Description
Course Outcomes: By the end of the course, participants would have:
- Identified the different types of FGM and the socio-cultural factors underpinning the practice among different communities in the UK.
- Gained a strong understanding of how FGM impacts on victims.
- Understood risk factors associated with FGM and guidelines for practitioners to help identify and safeguard children/ young women at risk of FGM.
- Gained knowledge of new ways of working with families where there is a risk of children being made to undergo FGM.
- Understood UK legislation around FGM, FGM Protection Orders, “mandatory reporting” and the challenges of successful prosecution.
- Understood the issue of male circumcision and the notion of “informed consent” in relation to minors.
